I started getting bitten at night mid-July 2021. After a few nights, I realized it wasn't just mosquitoes and advised the property manger.

She denied knowing of any bedbugs and suggested it was "just" fleas, brought in by the cat in the unit below. I found a flea hopping on my carpet but I said to her that it wasn't clear that my bites were only from fleas. She wrote me that she'd scheduled exterminators for August 5th - 2 full weeks later! They were also going to spray for the cockroaches I'

d been seeing for a month, who according to her, came from a severe infestation in the unit above.

The first week of waiting for the exterminators, the property manger provided me a solitary trap for cockroaches/other insects - the kind you buy at Canadian Tire. The second week, when I asked her to do something right away, she brought two more traps. The bugs were winning - I was being bitten and couldn't even be there in daytime hours. (I work full-time from home during Covid, so now I had to scramble for places with adequate Wi-Fi for daytime hours as well as a bed for the night.)

After the exterminators came Aug 5 and I let the air clear a few days, I tried to sleep in my apartment for the first time in weeks. I was completely devoured, much worse than in July. Turns out the property manager hadn't told the exterminators to spray for bedbugs. I sent a picture of one of the bugs I found to the property manager. A bedbug - her exterminator confirmed it. But she wouldn't get the exterminators back in to spray until August 24th!

There was no way I could sleep there.

So I moved out everything I wanted to try to salvage - sprayed the hell out of it or laundered it - and rented a storage unit to keep it. If you look online or talk to anyone who's had a bad bedbug infestation, you're advised that the only way to be sure you aren't taking bedbugs and/or their eggs with you is to abandon all your soft furniture. I will likely lose my bed, sofa, computer chair, dining and other chairs.

All of this - the moving and the unit and the throwing out - will end up costing me several thousand dollars, but the property owner - Debono Partnerships - is refusing to reimburse me for any or it or give back my last month's deposit. The property manager says I maybe brought hitchhikers (bedbugs) in with me. This is a sad joke - it's Covid, no one's travelling, I don't even go on TTC, I work from home, I'm at my boyfriend's place or mine almost 24/7 and he hasn't got any bedbugs. On the other hand, there's truly questionable carpeting in the building hallways, not to mention upstairs neighbours with cockroaches and downstairs neighbours with fleas (according to the property manger).

I gave notice at the end of July that I was moving out in 60 days because it was so clear that the landlord was foot-dragging in dealing with all the damn bugs. They won't give me my last month's rent for a place where I haven't been able to live during the whole of my notice period.

Anyone coming in should know that the property manager has threatened to cancel a follow up extermination appointment this month (September 2021) unless I empty the premises of my remaining furniture. Why should I? I'm still paying rent and I have yet to figure out whether any of my soft furniture is salvageable?

Good luck to anyone moving in.
